ULS includes various functions for transforming strings of Unicode text in locale-specific ways. Available transformations include:

• Converting alphabetic text between upper- and lowercase.
  
• Converting diacritical text between composed and decomposed character forms.
  
• Converting Japanese phonetic text (Hiragana/Katakana) from one syllabary to another.
